SASSY'S REVIEW
❖Mistified by Aurora Ascher was a fun little return to the Hell Bent world, and I really enjoyed getting more time with Mist and Lily after My Demon Hunter. This is Book 2.5 and a slice-of-life short story, so it isn’t introducing a completely new storyline. Instead, it gives us a glimpse of the life Mist and Lily are building after everything they survived while bringing them together with Eligos and Natalie from My Demon Romance.
Mist was still very much the possessive, suspicious, socially challenged demon I remembered. Watching him attempt to behave around people he doesn’t trust was both entertaining and surprisingly sweet because he hasn’t suddenly transformed into someone who understands human relationships. He still growls, assumes everyone is a threat, and occasionally needs Lily to remind him that terrorizing their hosts isn’t considered polite dinner behavior. 😂
What I especially liked was that Lily didn’t excuse everything simply because Mist was still learning. She understood where his behavior came from, but she also told him when he was making things difficult for her and asked him to trust her judgment. Mist listened because her happiness genuinely matters to him. Their relationship still has that possessive monster-romance energy, but Lily has her own voice and choices within it.
There were also some meaningful moments beneath the humor and spice. Mist has spent most of his existence being the Hunter, with his identity and purpose chosen for him. Now that he is free, he has to figure out who he is when he isn’t hunting someone. I really liked seeing him begin to think about what he wants to do with that freedom and how he might build an ordinary life with Lily. Those quieter conversations gave this short story more emotional substance than I expected.
Eligos and Natalie were fun additions, especially because they gave Lily someone who could understand what it’s like to love a demon. Their presence also forced Mist to face part of his past and see what freedom has meant for another couple. Wretchen brought some extra humor, too, because apparently no peaceful visit between demons is complete without a slightly unhinged gargoyle creeping around the house.
The spice is explicit and earns four peppers from me. There is only one major intimate scene, but this is a very short story, and Aurora Ascher certainly makes that scene count. 😂 More importantly, the intimacy still reflects Mist and Lily’s relationship. His possessiveness and commanding nature are present, but so are his tenderness, devotion, and concern for Lily’s pleasure.
The only reason Mistified didn’t earn five stars from me was its length. I knew it was a short slice-of-life story going in, so I wasn’t expecting a full novel or a major new conflict. I simply enjoyed being with Mist and Lily enough that I wanted more of them. Their adjustment to life together, Mist’s search for a new purpose, Lily becoming more confident in their relationship, and their plans for the future all had enough potential to support a longer story.
I also would have happily spent more time watching the friendship between Lily and Natalie develop and exploring the complicated history between Mist and Eligos. The story introduces some meaningful emotional possibilities, but it ends before any of them can be explored very deeply. That didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story—it just left me wishing the visit had lasted longer.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely, especially to readers who already love Mist and Lily. I strongly recommend reading My Demon Hunter, Lily and Mist’s book, before Mistified because this story takes place afterward and depends on readers already understanding their relationship, history, and everything they survived together. I’d also recommend reading My Demon Romance, the 0.5 prequel to the Hell Bent series, so you’ll already know Eligos and Natalie and can fully appreciate their appearance here.
My Final Verdict: Mistified was funny, spicy, sweet, and gave me a glimpse of the quieter life Mist and Lily are trying to build together. I genuinely enjoyed everything it gave me; I just wanted considerably more of it. Honestly, my biggest complaint is that Aurora Ascher gave me more time with this couple and somehow made me want them even more. 😂
