Beauty and the Demon

I’ll be honest, after getting to know Murmur in the previous books, I wasn’t entirely sure I was going to like him as a love interest. He was kind of an asshat, and I couldn’t imagine what woman would willingly put up with him. After all, he’s a demon, right? Well, I suppose demons need love too! 😂

Then Suyin came along, and I started seeing a side of Murmur I hadn’t expected. He’s still dangerous, manipulative, and more than capable of doing terrible things, but watching him struggle with his growing feelings for Suyin and gradually recognize just how much she means to him was one of my favorite parts of the story.

Suyin quickly became one of my favorite heroines in the series. She’s a powerful blood-born witch, a coven leader, intelligent, sarcastic, stubborn, and fiercely independent. I loved that she wasn’t afraid to challenge Murmur or stand up for herself, even when she knew how dangerous he could be. She’s exactly the kind of strong, naturally defiant FMC I enjoy reading about.

Murmur and Suyin’s relationship starts under some seriously questionable circumstances, with plenty of hostility, distrust, and tension. Neither is particularly impressed with the other, but their constant challenges gradually develop into curiosity, attraction, trust, and eventually love. I appreciated that their relationship wasn’t rushed and that they had time to develop a genuine emotional connection.

What I loved most was Murmur’s character development. Beneath his anger and hatred is someone carrying an enormous amount of emotional pain. As more of his past is revealed, his behavior begins to make sense, even when I don’t agree with his actions. Suyin becomes important to his growth, but she doesn’t magically fix him or excuse the things he’s done. He still has to confront his past, recognize the consequences of his choices, and decide what kind of man he wants to be.

I especially appreciated that falling in love doesn’t suddenly turn Murmur into a good guy. He’s still dangerous, intimidating, possessive, and morally questionable. But watching him become more vulnerable, caring, and willing to put someone else’s happiness ahead of his own showed me just how deeply he’d fallen for Suyin. That softer side may be reserved for her alone, but I think that says a lot about how much she means to him. She’s his exception, not his personality transplant, and I loved that Aurora kept him true to his character.

Suyin has her own emotional struggles, which gave their relationship more depth. She’s strong and capable without being emotionally untouchable, and I liked that she could be vulnerable without losing her independence. She challenges Murmur, makes her own decisions, and refuses to let his power overshadow her. More importantly, he gradually learns to respect her for it.

The supernatural storyline was another highlight. Suyin’s magic and premonitions, Murmur’s plans, and the continuing conflicts between Heaven and Hell kept the plot interesting beyond the romance. I enjoyed how their relationship became connected to the larger storyline rather than taking attention away from it.

I also loved seeing the rest of the demons and their partners again. Their dysfunctional found-family dynamic continues to be one of my favorite parts of this series. They may constantly insult and threaten each other, but their loyalty is undeniable. The humor and banter helped balance the darker elements of Murmur’s story without taking away from their emotional impact.

The romance has plenty of chemistry and sexual tension, and the intimate scenes are explicit. I’m giving this one four peppers because there’s definitely heat, but I appreciated that the spice never overshadowed the character development, emotional connection, or supernatural storyline.

Would I recommend Beauty and the Demon? Absolutely! If you enjoy paranormal romance, morally black demons, powerful witches, enemies-to-lovers, strong independent heroines, protective and possessive love interests, found family, supernatural politics, and plenty of spice, I highly recommend this one. I would definitely suggest reading the Hell Bent series in order to fully appreciate the characters and ongoing storyline.

My Final Verdict: An easy five-star read for me. I loved Suyin’s strength and independence, Murmur’s emotional growth, and the way their relationship developed without changing who either character fundamentally was. The romance, humor, magic, danger, and continuing supernatural conflicts kept me invested from beginning to end. I went into this book wondering whether I could even like Murmur as a love interest, and I finished completely understanding why Suyin fell for him. He still has plenty of darkness, but seeing how much he’s willing to change for the woman he loves made his story especially satisfying.

Now I’m eagerly waiting for Fallen Demon, Belial’s story, scheduled for January 2027. I have a feeling I know who might finally give him his well-deserved HEA, and I can’t wait to find out if I’m right. After everything we’ve seen from Belial, I’m especially curious to see who can handle all that rage. January can’t come soon enough!
