SASSY'S REVIEW

❖

I was already looking forward to reading Very Merry Demons before I even had the book in my hands. Eva Chase had sent me an email with a little preview, and I thought it was hilarious. Between that and the blurb, I was completely sold on the idea of a woman accidentally summoning three demons to help her find a boyfriend. I may have fangirled a little when I replied to Eva and told her how much I loved it and that I couldn’t wait to dive in. Well, I finally got my chance, and I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed!

The story follows Faith, who has two degrees, no idea what she wants to do with her life, and parents who would really like her to figure that out sooner rather than later. She’s also carrying quite a bit of guilt from her past, and it’s left her second-guessing practically every decision she makes. When she takes a temporary bookkeeping job at Sweet Harbor Inn, she’s hoping to earn some money, get herself back on track, and maybe even find a boyfriend to bring home for Christmas. Instead, she accidentally summons three demons who agree to help her find love if she’ll help them reunite into the single being they once were.

I liked Faith, and I could understand why she had such a hard time trusting herself. She’s smart and capable, but she’s so afraid of making another mistake or disappointing her parents that she rarely gives herself credit for anything she does right. There were times when I wanted to give her a little shake and remind her that she was doing just fine. I did feel like we spent a little too much time going over those same worries, especially after she’d already shown she could handle herself. But I enjoyed seeing her slowly become more confident and realize that she didn’t have to figure everything out all at once or live her life trying to make everyone else happy.

Now, Eri, Kal, and Lock were a whole lot of fun. Even though they were originally part of the same demon, the three of them couldn’t be more different. Eri is charming, flirty, and pretty convinced he knows everything there is to know about finding a man. Kal is sweet, affectionate, and so excited about practically everything that you can’t help but love him. And Lock is the grumpy, practical one who seems to spend half his time wondering what on earth the other two are doing. Naturally, I ended up having a soft spot for Lock. I’ve always loved a grumpy man who turns out to have a much bigger heart than he’d ever admit.

I really enjoyed the way the three of them interacted, especially when they were trying to figure out human relationships and all the little things people do that probably make absolutely no sense to a demon. Their personalities played off one another so well, and some of their conversations genuinely made me laugh. I loved that the humor wasn’t just about the situation Faith had gotten herself into. A lot of it came from the demons themselves, and the more time I spent with them, the more I enjoyed their little quirks.

Of course, things get a little complicated when the three demons who are supposed to be helping Faith find a boyfriend start falling for her themselves. I enjoyed watching their feelings change and seeing how differently each of them showed that they cared about her. There’s plenty of flirting, affection, and some very steamy moments, but what I liked most were the thoughtful things they did for her along the way.

One of my favorite moments was when Lock stood up for Faith while her parents were putting pressure on her about her future. He could see how hard she was being on herself, and I loved that he supported her without trying to tell her what to do. I also thought the Christmas gifts were incredibly sweet, especially the repaired pitcher. Those are the kinds of little things I love in a romance, when someone notices what matters to the person they care about and goes out of their way to show it.

And since we’re talking about romance, I should probably mention that Eva doesn’t hold back when things start heating up. Most of the story is spent getting to know the characters, enjoying the Christmas festivities, and watching their relationships grow, but the intimate scenes are quite detailed. There’s a pretty big difference between the cozy Christmas atmosphere and just how steamy things get behind closed doors, and I enjoyed that balance. The spice isn’t constant throughout the book, but when it’s there, it’s definitely there!

I did wish we’d gotten a little more time with each of the relationships, though. I liked all three demons and the different things they brought into Faith’s life, but some of the feelings seemed to develop a little faster than I would have liked. I would have enjoyed spending more time with Faith and each of them individually, especially as their original arrangement started turning into something neither side had planned.

I was also really curious about the demons’ history. The idea that they were once a single being but had become three completely different individuals was interesting, and I kept wondering what would happen if they actually managed to reunite. They’d developed their own personalities, their own feelings, and now their own relationships with Faith. I wanted to know more about who they were before they separated and what becoming one again might mean for them. We do get some answers, but I would have loved a little more of their story.

Sweet Harbor Inn was another part of the book I really enjoyed. It’s an old inn with some rather unusual residents, lots of Christmas activities, and a building that seems determined to give everyone a headache. I loved the cozy atmosphere and the friendships Faith made while she was there. It was nice seeing her find something she was good at and become part of a place where people genuinely appreciated her. She went there looking for a temporary job, but somewhere along the way, she started finding a home.

Of course, the inn has a few problems that go well beyond ordinary maintenance. Strange noises, unexplained damage, and some increasingly worrying incidents make it clear that something supernatural is going on. I was curious about what was happening and how everyone was going to deal with it, although I did feel like the mystery got pushed aside a little too often.

I loved spending time with the characters and enjoyed all the Christmas activities, but there were moments when I’d start getting interested in what was happening at the inn, only for the story to move on to something else. I would have liked those strange incidents to build a little more steadily so that the mystery stayed in the back of my mind even while everything else was going on.

I did like how Eva eventually brought everything together, though. Without giving away what happens, I appreciated that there was more to the situation than simply having someone evil causing trouble. It fit nicely with what we’d been learning about Faith and the way she’d been carrying so much guilt over things that had gone wrong in her life.

One part that really stayed with me was Lock talking about how going through difficult experiences can make us appreciate the good things in life that much more. I thought that was such a lovely way of looking at things, and it made me think about Faith and how much she’d been holding herself back because of her past. Sometimes we get so caught up in the things we wish we’d done differently that we forget we’re still allowed to move forward and enjoy what’s right in front of us.

I especially liked seeing Faith finally trust herself toward the end. After spending so much time worrying about making the wrong choices, she reached a point where she was willing to do what she believed was right without needing someone else to reassure her first. I was happy to see that change in her, and I thought it brought her story together nicely.

I do wish we’d had a little more time with the mystery before everything was resolved. Once the answers started coming, things moved along pretty quickly, and a few problems worked themselves out a little more easily than I expected. I would have liked more background on what had been happening at the inn and a little more buildup before the ending. Still, I appreciated the way everything turned out, and I thought the ending suited the story.

The epilogue was a nice touch, too. I enjoyed seeing where everyone ended up and how much more comfortable Faith had become with the life she was building. She hadn’t suddenly figured out every little detail of her future, but she was finally learning that she didn’t have to. I liked that her happiness came from more than just falling in love. She’d made friends, found somewhere she belonged, and discovered that she was capable of making a life for herself.

WOULD I RECOMMEND VERY MERRY DEMONS?

Absolutely! If you enjoy paranormal romance, why-choose relationships, found family, Christmas magic, plenty of humor, and some seriously steamy moments, I think you’ll have a lot of fun with this one. I especially enjoyed the different personalities of the three demons, their banter, and the way they each brought something special into Faith’s life.

I would say that if you’re looking for dark, ruthless demons or a fantasy with a lot of complicated supernatural politics and danger, this probably isn’t quite what you’re expecting. It’s much more of a fun, cozy Christmas romance, although the intimate scenes are definitely more explicit than the sweet holiday setting might lead you to believe.

MY FINAL VERDICT:

I really enjoyed Very Merry Demons, and I’m glad that little preview Eva sent me caught my attention because it turned out to be such a fun read. I loved the humor, the three very different demons, and the sweet moments that showed how much they cared about Faith. I also liked that there was more to the story than romance. Watching Faith learn to forgive herself, find her confidence, and discover a place where she belonged made me care about her journey.

What would have made this a five-star read for me? I would have liked to know more about the demons’ past and what it meant for them to have once been a single being. I also wanted a little more time with each romantic relationship, a stronger buildup to the mystery at Sweet Harbor Inn, and fewer moments where Faith went back to questioning herself after she’d already shown how capable she was. A few things also worked out a little too conveniently toward the end.

But none of those things ruined the story for me. There was so much more that I enjoyed than anything I would have changed. The characters were fun, the romance was sweet and spicy, and the humor had me laughing more than once. I appreciated the message behind the story, and I finished it feeling happy with the way everything came together.

I’m giving Very Merry Demons four stars because I genuinely enjoyed reading it and would happily recommend it. There were a few things I wish Eva had spent more time developing, but they weren’t enough to take away from everything I loved about the book. I was excited to read it from the moment I saw that preview, and I’m happy to say it lived up to that excitement.

As for the spice, I’m giving it four peppers. The intimate scenes aren’t happening on every other page, but they’re detailed and explicit enough to earn that rating on my scale.
