SASSY'S REVIEW
❖Gang of Ghouls by Eva Chase was an entertaining dark paranormal romance with an unusual supernatural twist, four morally questionable love interests, a strong found-family dynamic, and plenty of mystery. I especially enjoyed that the story offered more than just romance and spice. There was an actual mystery to unravel, along with supernatural powers, criminal organizations, family secrets, and enough danger to keep things interesting.
This complete series includes The Stalking Dead, Criminal Spirits, Grave Misconduct, and Deathly Delinquency. The story follows Lily, who returns to Lovell Rise after spending seven years in a psychiatric hospital. She’s trying to rebuild her life, reconnect with her younger sister Marisol, and uncover the truth about her past. Unfortunately, that becomes considerably more complicated when four men from her childhood, who also happen to be dead, find their way back into her life.
Nox, Ruin, Jett, and Kai were some of my favorite parts of the series. These aren’t your typical ghosts, and the way they return to the physical world through possessing other people’s bodies was an interesting twist. They’re former members of the Skullbreakers gang, fiercely loyal to Lily, and perfectly willing to do some morally questionable things to protect her. I appreciated that Eva didn’t try to make them completely good just because they’re the romantic interests. They’re dangerous, possessive, and occasionally violent, but they also genuinely care about Lily and one another.
I also liked that each of the four men had his own personality. Nox is the commanding and protective leader, Ruin brings humor and mischief, Jett has a more sensitive and artistic side, and Kai is the analytical one. Their different personalities made their interactions entertaining, and I enjoyed the loyalty and shared history that connected them. Their relationships felt like a genuine found family rather than four men who just happened to be interested in the same woman.
Lily was another character I enjoyed. She’s dealing with missing memories, years of isolation, family problems, and people who have spent far too much time controlling her life. I appreciated that she wasn’t content to simply accept what everyone told her. She questions things, pushes back, and becomes increasingly determined to uncover the truth and make her own decisions. Watching her begin to reclaim control over her life and understand her supernatural abilities gave the story more emotional substance.
Her relationship with Marisol was especially important to me because it gave Lily something meaningful outside the romance. She genuinely wants to reconnect with and protect her younger sister, and that relationship adds another layer to her motivations. I liked that Lily’s entire existence didn’t revolve around her four men, even though their relationships were a major part of the story.
The mystery surrounding Lily’s missing memories and the events that led to her hospitalization was one of the strongest parts of the series. As more information comes to light, the supernatural elements, criminal organizations, family secrets, and larger conflicts begin connecting in interesting ways. I enjoyed discovering how everything fit together, and the ongoing mystery gave me a reason to keep reading beyond wanting to see what happened between Lily and the guys.
I also liked the supernatural concept itself. Having four dead gang members return through body possession creates some interesting complications, especially when you consider the moral implications. These men have been given another chance at a physical existence, but the way they achieve it isn’t exactly innocent. I would have loved to explore that side of the story more deeply, along with the supernatural rules, their abilities, and the consequences of their return.
That was probably my biggest issue with the series overall. There are so many interesting things happening that I sometimes felt the story needed more room to develop them. Between Lily’s past, her growing powers, four romantic relationships, the supernatural mystery, gang rivalries, and the larger criminal conflicts, there’s a lot packed into these books. While the pacing kept things moving, I occasionally wanted the story to slow down long enough to explore some of those elements in greater detail.
I also would have appreciated more individual time between Lily and each of the men. They all have distinct personalities, and I enjoyed their relationships, but I wanted more of those quieter moments where they could connect emotionally without another threat or crisis demanding their attention. With four love interests, I think those individual connections are especially important. The chemistry and protective instincts were certainly there, but a little more emotional development would have made their relationships even stronger for me.
The spice was another part of the story, and there’s plenty of chemistry between Lily and her men. The intimate scenes fit the why-choose relationship, but I appreciated that there was enough happening outside the bedroom to keep the story interesting. Between the mystery, supernatural abilities, action, and ongoing conflicts, the romance never had to carry the entire series on its own.
I was also glad the complete series provided a satisfying conclusion. After following Lily and the guys through four books, I wanted to see their journey come together rather than being left with a bunch of unanswered questions. The epilogues were a nice addition, especially getting a glimpse of their lives after everything they’d been through. I always appreciate when an author gives readers a little more time with characters they’ve spent an entire series getting attached to.
Overall, I really enjoyed Gang of Ghouls. The supernatural premise was different, the four men were entertaining and morally questionable in all the right ways, and Lily had enough of her own struggles and personal growth to keep me invested in her story. The mystery, found-family relationships, humor, and action made this a fun series to read.
What kept it from five stars for me wasn’t that I disliked anything major. I simply wanted more depth in some of the areas I found most interesting. I would have happily traded a few of the faster transitions and ongoing conflicts for more supernatural worldbuilding, stronger individual emotional connections, and more time exploring the consequences of everything these characters experienced.
Would I recommend Gang of Ghouls? Absolutely! If you enjoy dark paranormal romance, why-choose relationships, morally gray love interests, protective and possessive men, strong heroines, found family, supernatural mysteries, revenge, and plenty of spice, this series is worth checking out.
My Final Verdict: A fun, action-packed paranormal romance with an unusual supernatural concept, entertaining characters, and an interesting mystery that develops throughout all four books. I loved the distinct personalities of Nox, Ruin, Jett, and Kai, Lily’s determination to reclaim her life, and the loyalty that connected this dysfunctional little family. I would have preferred more depth in the supernatural world and individual relationships, but I genuinely enjoyed the series and appreciated its satisfying conclusion. A little more time developing those elements would have made this a five-star read for me.
