SASSY'S REVIEW

❖

The Dark Lord’s Guide to Honeymooning was a really good continuation of Kazimir and Arabella’s story, filled with magic, danger, political intrigue, romance, and plenty of humor. Apparently, marrying a Dark Lord doesn’t guarantee a peaceful honeymoon, especially when your husband has enemies to eliminate, kingdoms to conquer, and absolutely no hesitation about killing or torturing anyone who gets in his way.

One of the things I enjoyed most was seeing how Kazimir and Arabella’s relationship continued to develop after the first book. Their chemistry and banter are still entertaining, but marriage brings its own challenges. They’re both stubborn, opinionated, and accustomed to doing things their own way, which leads to plenty of arguments and misunderstandings. I appreciated that their relationship didn’t suddenly become perfect simply because they got married, although there were moments when I wished they’d communicate a little better instead of creating more problems for themselves.

Arabella continues to be the kind of heroine I enjoy. She’s independent, compassionate, determined, and refuses to let Kazimir make every decision simply because he’s a powerful Dark Lord. I liked watching her become more confident in her abilities and increasingly willing to challenge him when she disagreed with his plans. She genuinely cares about the people around her, even when Kazimir would probably prefer to eliminate them rather than help them.

Kazimir remains the arrogant, possessive, morally black villain I enjoyed in the first book. Marriage certainly hasn’t softened his ruthless nature, and he’s still perfectly capable of killing or torturing anyone who stands in his way. What I appreciated was seeing more of the man beneath that brutality, particularly his past, his vulnerabilities, and the influence of the Shadow King. His love for Arabella gives him something worth fighting for, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a dangerous man with very little regard for anyone who crosses him.

Their relationship also faces some serious challenges involving trust, secrets, and difficult decisions. Kazimir struggles with parts of himself he doesn’t fully understand, while Arabella is dealing with her own discoveries and responsibilities. I liked that these conflicts gave their relationship more emotional depth, although I occasionally became frustrated with how often their stubbornness and lack of communication complicated things. I wanted to see a little more progress between them rather than revisiting some of the same relationship problems.

The supporting characters were another highlight. I enjoyed seeing more of Vex, Griffin, Sebastian, Thorne, and the rest of the increasingly dysfunctional group surrounding Kazimir and Arabella. Their different personalities, loyalty, and constant interference add plenty of humor to the story. I also appreciated how their relationships continue developing into something resembling a found family. Watching Kazimir deal with the growing number of people Arabella insists on helping was particularly entertaining.

The fantasy world expands considerably in this book, which I enjoyed. Between the God Spire, the Alchemist, ancient magic, ley lines, political conflicts, and the mysteries surrounding the Shadow King, there’s a much larger story developing beyond Kazimir and Arabella’s marriage. I liked learning more about the history of this world and how the different magical forces and supernatural conflicts connect.

My biggest issue was the pacing and how much the story tries to accomplish at once. There are a lot of overlapping conflicts, magical discoveries, relationship problems, and political developments. While that certainly kept things interesting, some important revelations and emotional moments didn’t receive as much attention as I would have liked. I occasionally wanted the story to slow down long enough to explore the consequences of what had just happened before moving on to the next problem.

The humor was another reason I enjoyed this book. Kazimir’s dramatic villain behavior, Arabella’s refusal to cooperate with his nonsense, and the supporting characters’ reactions create some genuinely entertaining situations. I appreciated that the humor felt natural to their personalities and helped balance the darker elements without completely taking away from the danger.

For spice, I’m giving this one 4/5 peppers. Kazimir and Arabella have great chemistry, and their intimate scenes are explicit, but the romance doesn’t overshadow the larger storyline. There’s plenty happening with the magical conflicts, political intrigue, and character relationships. I appreciated that their physical attraction was only one part of their marriage, although I would have liked more time spent developing some of their emotional conversations outside the bedroom.

The ending leaves several important questions unanswered. Rather than feeling like a complete conclusion, it sets up the next stage of Kazimir and Arabella’s story. Knowing there’s another book coming makes that easier to appreciate, although I still would have liked a little more resolution to some of the conflicts introduced in this installment.

At the time of this review, the third book in the series, The Dark Lord’s Guide to Marriage (and Other Ritual Sacrifices), is scheduled for publication on June 3, 2027, according to Simon & Schuster’s official publisher listing. I’m looking forward to seeing how Tiffany Hunt continues Kazimir and Arabella’s story and addresses the questions left unanswered here.

Would I recommend The Dark Lord’s Guide to Honeymooning? Absolutely! If you enjoy fantasy romance, morally black villains, strong independent heroines, complicated marriages, magical powers, political intrigue, found family, sarcastic humor, and plenty of spice, this series is worth checking out. I would definitely recommend starting with The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating (and Other War Crimes) because the relationships, character histories, and ongoing conflicts build directly on the first book.

My Final Verdict: I’m giving The Dark Lord’s Guide to Honeymooning 4/5 stars. I enjoyed the expanded fantasy world, Kazimir’s character development, Arabella’s independence, and the humor throughout the story. What kept it from five stars for me was the crowded pacing, repeated relationship conflicts, and some emotional developments that deserved more attention. I also would have appreciated a little more resolution before moving into the next installment. Overall, I had a really good time with this book, and I’m hoping the third book delivers the emotional payoff and answers I’m still waiting for.

Final Rating: ⭐ 4/5 Stars | 🌶️ 4/5 Peppers
