SASSY'S REVIEW

❖

The Dark in Her Veins by M. K. Lobb was a dark, atmospheric, and genuinely engaging fantasy read with an intriguing storyline, morally complicated characters, and a fascinating supernatural world. I particularly enjoyed the combination of religious corruption, political manipulation, dangerous secrets, and forbidden magic. The author created a world where morality isn’t always black and white, and I appreciated how the story explored guilt, survival, personal freedom, and the consequences of our choices.

Talin was one of my favorite aspects of the story. She’s stubborn, sarcastic, impulsive, and far from perfect, which made her all the more interesting to me. She’s made some terrible decisions, and I appreciated that the author didn’t simply excuse her actions because of her circumstances. Beneath her tough exterior is someone struggling with guilt, trauma, and the desire to take control of her own life. I enjoyed watching her begin to question everything she’s been taught, although there were definitely moments when her recklessness frustrated me. Still, I would much rather read about a flawed heroine who challenges authority than one who blindly accepts everything she’s told.

Then there’s Slade, who brings his own brand of danger, mystery, and morally questionable behavior to the story. I enjoyed the tension between him and Talin, particularly their sarcastic exchanges and constant challenges to one another. Their chemistry was great, and I appreciated that their attraction didn’t suddenly erase their distrust or conflicting motivations. Slade is certainly no traditional hero, and his possessive, controlling personality creates an interesting but sometimes uncomfortable power dynamic. While I enjoyed their developing relationship, I would have liked a little more emotional intimacy alongside the physical attraction.

The world-building was another highlight for me. I found the concept of Bloodrot particularly fascinating, especially the idea that sins could have physical consequences in a society controlled by religious authority. The Regiment, the Trench, and the supernatural elements created an oppressive atmosphere that complemented the storyline beautifully. I also appreciated the deeper themes surrounding faith, manipulation, and the difference between genuine morality and the abuse of power. However, there were times when the amount of historical and religious information became a little overwhelming. While I enjoyed learning about the world, I would have preferred some of those details to be revealed more naturally throughout the story.

My biggest issues were with the occasional pacing inconsistencies and the amount of exposition. The story starts strong, and there are plenty of moments that kept me invested, but some sections in the middle slowed down with lengthy explanations and repeated internal thoughts. I also felt that certain emotional moments deserved more attention before the story moved on to the next conflict. The supporting characters added depth to Talin’s journey, particularly through her family relationships and past experiences, but I would have appreciated a little more development in some of those connections.

The ending also left me with mixed feelings. I appreciated the rising tension, revelations, and consequences of Talin’s decisions, but I wanted a little more emotional resolution after everything she’d experienced. I understand that this is part of a larger story, and I certainly don’t expect every mystery to be solved in the first book. However, I would have liked a stronger sense of closure for at least one of the major conflicts before being left wondering what happens next.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely! If you enjoy dark fantasy, morally gray characters, strong but imperfect heroines, dangerous love interests, religious and political intrigue, supernatural mysteries, and plenty of tension, this is definitely worth adding to your TBR. Just be aware that the story explores some darker subjects and contains mature content, so I would recommend checking the content warnings beforehand.

My Final Verdict: I really enjoyed The Dark in Her Veins. The world-building, complicated characters, supernatural elements, and chemistry between Talin and Slade kept me interested and wanting to know more. While some of the exposition and pacing slowed things down, and I would have appreciated a little more emotional development and payoff toward the end, those issues didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the story overall. A little tighter pacing and a stronger resolution would have made this a five-star read for me, but I’m definitely interested in seeing where the story goes next.
