The Perfect Marriage

Thrillers, suspense, and mysteries are all new territory for me. When I picked up The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose, I was stepping outside my usual Romantasy comfort zone, and I honestly wasn’t sure how it would go. Turns out, I had absolutely nothing to worry about. Not only did I enjoy it, but by the time I finished, I was already looking forward to reading The Perfect Divorce.

The story follows Sarah and Adam Morgan, whose ten-year marriage is anything but perfect. Sarah is a successful criminal defense attorney, Adam is a struggling writer, and apparently Adam decides having an affair is a good idea. It is not. When his mistress, Kelly Summers, is found murdered, Adam becomes the prime suspect, leaving Sarah in the rather unfortunate position of defending her cheating husband against a murder charge.

I really enjoyed the alternating POVs because Sarah and Adam have very different perspectives on their marriage. Adam feels neglected and overshadowed by Sarah’s career, while Sarah is aware that work has consumed much of her time but still loves her husband. I could understand how their relationship reached this point without agreeing with Adam’s decisions. The man somehow manages to convince himself that he loves both women, which did absolutely nothing to earn him sympathy from me. Sir, that is not how this works.

Sarah was easily the more interesting character for me. She’s intelligent, determined, and capable of keeping her composure under circumstances that would probably have me losing my mind. Adam, on the other hand, spent a good portion of the book testing my patience with his choices and excuses. I didn’t mind reading his POV, though. If anything, it just gave me more opportunities to argue with him.

What I enjoyed most was the mystery itself. Between the secrets, suspicious behavior, and constantly shifting possibilities, I never felt completely certain who was telling the truth. Every time I settled on a theory and convinced myself I’d figured everything out, something else came along and proved me wrong. Eventually, I stopped pretending I knew where Jeneva was taking me and just enjoyed trying to solve the mystery.

The short chapters and alternating perspectives kept the pacing moving nicely overall. There were a few slower moments in the middle as the investigation developed, and some legal and investigative details made me question how realistically things would play out. However, neither issue bothered me enough to pull me out of the story. More importantly, my attention never wandered, which says quite a bit considering this was my first real experience with these genres.

And that ending? Nope. Not spoiling it. I’ll just say Jeneva got me. I thought I knew what happened. I was confident I knew. I absolutely did not know! I loved how the final revelations made me reconsider things I’d read earlier and realize I’d been so busy looking in one direction that I’d overlooked other possibilities.

As for the spice, there is some explicit sexual content involving Adam’s affair, but it isn’t a major focus. The story is much more concerned with murder, secrets, deception, and figuring out who can actually be trusted.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely! If you enjoy murder mysteries, psychological suspense, unreliable characters, secrets, and unexpected twists, The Perfect Marriage is worth adding to your TBR. It kept me guessing, made me confidently wrong more than once, and apparently opened the door to an entirely new section of the bookstore for me.

My Final Verdict: The Perfect Marriage was an entertaining, suspenseful read that kept me invested from beginning to end. A few slower moments and questionable details held it back from a full five stars, but the mystery, shifting suspicions, and unexpected ending more than made up for them. For a book outside my usual reading preferences, it did a pretty freakin’ good job of convincing me I’ve been overlooking an entire genre. And considering I finished it already wanting The Perfect Divorce, I’d say this little experiment worked out rather well.
