I’ve officially stepped outside of my reading comfort zone with this preorder. I normally stay clear of horror, but after enjoying Jeneva Rose’s The Perfect Marriage and The Perfect Divorce, I decided I was willing to take a chance on her newest release, Sometimes I Scare Myself: A Collection of Horror.
Releasing September 22, 2026, Sometimes I Scare Myself is a collection of three horror stories: Never Kill the Medium, The Nightmare House, and All Curses Are Final. The stories venture into séances, haunted houses, cursed objects, and the darker side of Jeneva Rose’s storytelling—so this will definitely be a departure from what I normally choose for myself.
I preordered the signed hardcover edition, but the book itself is getting some beautiful special-edition treatment as well. The deluxe hardcover features tarot-card sprayed edges and illustrated endpapers, giving the entire edition a suitably creepy look to match the stories inside.
There is also a special preorder incentive available through participating independent bookstores while supplies last. Those preorders include two custom tarot-card stickers and a planchette bookmark. For me, this preorder really came down to the author. Horror isn’t a genre I normally read—in fact, it’s one I’ve intentionally stayed away from—but I enjoyed Jeneva Rose’s other books enough that I’m willing to step outside my comfort zone and see what she does with it. Here’s hoping stepping outside my comfort zone doesn’t come back to haunt me. 😂
