đ¤ From Escape to Obsession
What started as a simple escape from reality somehow became a passion. Books became my favorite place to disappear when life got a little too loud, but somewhere between âjust one more chapterâ and entirely too many fictional men with questionable morals, reading went from just an escape to a full-blown obsession.
My journey into ARC reviewing actually happened by accident. I started talking with authors about books I loved, sharing my thoughts on their stories and occasionally pointing out typos, missing words, or little errors I noticed while reading their ebooks. Eventually, some of those authors began asking me to read their ARCs and offer my feedback before publication. I was hooked. There was something incredibly rewarding about getting an early look at a story while offering thoughtful, constructive feedback that might actually help make the book even better for the next reader.
That experience shaped the kind of reviewer I am today, but so did seeing the other side of reviewing. Over the years, Iâve watched comments and reviews on authorsâ books that werenât simply criticalâthey were downright vicious and cruel. Iâve even watched authors with so much potential become so discouraged by that kind of treatment that they stopped writing altogether, sometimes right in the middle of a series I was already invested in. And honestly, seeing that hurt my soul for them. Thereâs a real person behind every book, and while putting your work into the world means accepting that not everyone is going to love it, I donât believe disliking a book gives anyone permission to tear apart the person who wrote it.
Thatâs a big reason I review books the way I do. I believe books deserve honest opinions without unnecessary cruelty. Iâll happily gush over what I loved, explain what didnât work for me, and share what I think could have taken a story to the next level. If something doesnât work for me, I want to explain why and, whenever possible, what might have made it stronger. Being a writer myself has only deepened my appreciation for the work behind every bookâand reinforced my belief that constructive criticism can be completely honest without being cruel. We can help our authors grow without tearing them down in the process.
But books have always been about more than just reading and reviewing for me. I love recommending my favorite ones to friends, discovering new authors, and finding those books that make me immediately think, Ohhh, I know exactly who needs to read this. đ That love of sharing books is why I created Sassyâs Nook, my Facebook reading group and little corner of bookish chaos where readers can connect, share recommendations, talk about what weâre reading, participate in games and buddy reads, and occasionally enable each otherâs already questionable book-buying habits.
And then thereâs Sassy Reviews, where all those opinions I clearly wasnât capable of keeping to myself finally found a home. đ Itâs where I can share my honest reviews, ARC reads, recommendations, and thoughts on the stories that consume meâwith plenty of sarcasm, caffeine, dark humor, and absolutely no pretending that every book is a five-star masterpiece.
What began as my escape from reality became a passion, then an obsession, and eventually an entire little bookish world of my ownâwriting stories, reviewing books, supporting authors, recommending new obsessions, and connecting with other readers who understand exactly why âjust one more chapterâ is both a perfectly reasonable life choice and a complete lie. đ¤
